Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day, the one I look forward to the most and the one I have always been taught is the most important meal of the day. Unfortunately however, as I’m not able to eat gluten or dairy and have digestion problems it’s the meal I struggle with the most.

Research shows that our bodies become more acidic, dehydrated and contracted during the night. Effectively, when we wake up in the morning our bodies are struggling with life just as much as we are. We need to ensure therefore, that our main focus in the morning is on hydrating and alkalizing our bodies to set us up for our day ahead and give us bundles of energy. Below are a few things you can do to help you boost your energy and keep you feeling bloat free all day.

Drink two glasses of water
Drink a glass of cold water followed by a warm one with a little bit of lemon in every morning. The cold water helps to kick start your metabolism and re-hydrate the body. Adding a little lemon juice to your second glass of water will help stimulate your bowls and get them moving everything through.

Try to have an all-alkaline, high-water-content, expansive breakfast
A good way to start a morning is with a smoothie or a bowl of veggies. By eating foods with high levels of alkaline such as spinach and berries, we help fight the acidic state that our body has fallen into overnight and bring it back to a neutral balance. High-water-content foods will help re-hydrate the body and expansive foods such as herbs, kefir and raw veggies will bring balance to the contractive state of the body to aid with digestion throughout the rest of the day.

Digest your food for your digestive system – smoothies, smoothie bowls and green ‘super juices’

Most articles from various doctors and nutritionists, suggests that those with IBS and or food intolerances may struggle to digest big meals before the digestive system properly wakes up. By making breakfast in the form of a smoothie, smoothie bowl or green drink we not only get all the alkaline forming veggie goods we need, we are also effectively digesting the food before our digestive systems have to. By giving your digestive system a bit of a break in the morning you will be thanked in the form of energy!

Shot some coconut Kefir
Kefir is a little life saver. Every morning try to have one shot of coconut Kefir (126g) as it boosts the immune system, aids digestion and balances gut flora.

Probiotic tablets
Probiotic tablets are full of friendly bacteria that fight the nasty bacteria that live in our gut. The benefits of probiotics are endless; aiding digestion, clearing up skin and preventing bloating are just a few of its wonderful effects.

Leave protein until a little later
Many protein rich foods such as animal meat are a very concentrated, contracting food and in turn may be hard for the body to digest. Undigested proteins can become highly toxic in your digestive tract which can cause uncomfort. I have noticed a huge difference by waiting to consume protein foods later in the day when the body has the energy and time it needs to digest them.

Ginseng Panax
Ginseng Panax is in simple terms, a plant. Originating in China over 4,000 years ago, it is one of the most well-known Chinese remedies. Long recognised as an important, precious tonic herb, it is often described as a panacea, meaning it can effectively help battle several illnesses and diseases. It can be used to improve concentration, energy levels, memory and more.

Breakfast doesn’t have to be just a case of running out the door with some toast in hand. A lot of people say that they don’t have time in the morning, but in reality it takes no time at all and the results are more than worth getting up just 5 minutes earlier.
