"I have been a practising nutritionist for 21 years, during this time I have had 3 children so have always juggled work and home-life. My work is very varied; I have my own home clinic and see clients on a one-one basis, I run healthy eating courses, hold cookery classes and have published a cookery book of healthy food. 

In the past, I've worked for The Food Doctor and for the last 12 years have worked with The Healthy Holiday Company, taking clients to beautiful locations for a full week of fitness, yoga and healthy eating. I also enjoy giving talks to companies on nutrition and health." 

What are the biggest changed you've seen in the world of nutrition over the past 2 decades?

" Since qualifying in the 90's, the world of nutrition has really moved on. Science advances rapidly and there is a lot of interest now in genetics and the role nutrition has to play in guarding against the diseases we might be more genetically predisposed to. There have been massive advances in our understanding of gut health and it's influence on immunity and mental health. We have learnt so much about the microbiome (gut bacteria) and its role in health. New and improved laboratory tests can now really help with our understanding of the causes of ill health." 

What are the biggest misconceptions people generally hold about nutrition?

"There is so much information and misinformation about nutrition in the media that people, understandably, get really confused. I often have to persuade clients that it is ok to take specific supplements or to cook with coconut oil, for example, as they might have read a negative newspaper report about these based on some dodgy science. 

A common misconception is that what works for one person will work for another - people don't understand that we are all biochemically individual and that we should experiment with what works best for us. Just because your friend stops feeling bloated when she stops eating gluten doesn't mean that you will necessarily get the same result if you abstain. People are also often worried about consuming fats from avocados, nuts, seeds and cold pressed oils because they have been brainwashed into worrying more about calories than the nutritional benefits of healthy foods. "

Do you have any fundamental bits of advice that you think everyone should follow?

"Absolutely. Although everyone can benefit from specific and personalised recommendations when it comes to nutrition, there are some things that everyone should try to do for better health: 

  1. Severely limit all foods and drinks containing added sugar
  2. Restrict all processed foods - it's infinitely better to cook with fresh ingredients rather than shop-bought ready-made meals 
  3. Don't be afraid of healthy fats - consume oily fish, nuts, seeds and cold pressed nut and seed oils daily 
  4. Ensure that half of your plate is full of fresh vegetables
  5. Don't graze on snacks all day, eat proper meals at the table 
  6. Drink plenty of fresh water and restrict teas and coffees to no more than 3 a day"
