In order for you and your baby to grow, thrive and be healthy and comfortable during your pregnancy, it’s important to pay particular attention to your changing nutritional needs. With all the advice out there for mummies-to-be, it can get a little confusing working out what's best for you and your baby, but with the new VITL app, you'll receive the latest health advice from conception through to breastfeeding.
There are well-researched guidelines when it comes to supplements during pregnancy, as well as precautionary warnings about nutrients that should be avoided for safety. Specific nutrients will benefit you in certain trimesters, which is why your personalised VITL supplement protocol, formulated for you through the VITL app will evolve with your pregnancy, providing you and your baby with the nutrients you need, when you need them.
If you are trying to conceive, pregnant or breastfeeding, some or all of the following nutrients will be included in your personalised supplement protocol (depending on your needs). The vitamins and minerals in our pregnancy supplements are food state, meaning that they are not only highly absorbable, but also easy on the often compromised pregnancy digestive system.
Folate (in its active form) is needed to allow your baby to grow a healthy spine and spinal code, and to help protect against miscarriage (1)
Vitamin D is a common deficiency and recommended for everybody, however, it is especially recommended throughout pregnancy. It is linked to supporting everything from fertility to immune, bone and mood health. Specifically, in pregnancy, it has been shown to help prevent gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, preterm birth, low birth weight, and achy muscles (2). Our nutritionists have reviewed the latest research and expert advice to ensure optimally supportive levels of vitamin D3 are included in our pregnancy formulations.
The VITL pregnancy formulations include iron which is needed in higher levels during pregnancy.
Also included is the mineral zinc, which is associated with preventing stretch marks.
Chromium and B6
Chromium and B6 help to balance blood sugar, which plays a major role in morning sickness symptoms.
Vitamin C has been shown to protect your baby’s developing cells.
Digestion problems are common in the general populations but these are often exacerbated or arise for the first time themselves during pregnancy. If this is something you are experiencing during your pregnancy, your personalised pregnancy pack will provide you with probiotics (friendly gut bacteria) to ease the symptoms. Additionally, you pass your flora on to your baby when it is born, this flora is important not only for your baby’s digestion development but also its immune system. In fact, studies have suggested that taking a probiotic during your 3rd trimester and whilst breastfeeding can considerably reduce the risk of childhood allergies, eczema (3), and asthma.
Calcium and Magnesium
Calcium and magnesium are 2 major nutrients that are particularly important in the 3rd trimester. Calcium is needed in large quantities for your baby’s bone development. It is unlikely your baby will not be getting enough calcium, but it may lead a depletion of your own calcium stores, so it is important to keep topped up to keep your bones and teeth strong and healthy. Magnesium helps you muscle relax so, as your pelvis expands, it can help relieve aches and pains, as well as restless legs at night. It can also help you relax so you can sleep well.
An omega 3 supplement, especially one high in DHA (rather than EPA), is particularly beneficial for health during pregnancy. DHA is needed for your baby’s brain development and your body will prioritise providing it for your baby, which may leave you depleted. Supplementing with omega 3 during pregnancy has also been associated with reducing antenatal depression and anxiety (4).
