Biotin (B7) is particularly key to good hair health. Biotin promotes healthy hair by improving hair elasticity (so that means less breakage) and hair dryness (which also helps against breakage). Biotin also helps to produce keratin, a primary component of healthy hair. Other B vitamins are key for supporting your adrenal glands, helping to stimulate hair growth, and also for making red blood cells which carry oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles stimulating hair growth.
Whilst it's well known that vitamin A is good for eye health, this key vitamin also supports healthy hair. All cells require vitamin A for growth and it also helps skin glands to produce sebum - an oily substance that keeps your scalp moist and prevents your hair from drying out and breaking off. It’s important to stick to recommended values of vitamin A as it can be toxic at excessive levels.
Vitamin C is in the antioxidant family of vitamin superstars for hair. Antioxidants play a role in preventing oxidative stress (consider it a biological form of rusting) which is considered an important factor of ageing. Vitamin C is also a building block of collagen, a structural protein that is key for strong hair, skin and nails.
More than just the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D is involved in cell growth as well as homeostasis - the process of keeping your systems in balance. Vitamin D deficiency has been found to contribute to alopecia areta1 and research also suggests that vitamin D may help to create new cells that grow hair 2.

Another key vitamin for hair is vitamin E. Like vitamin C, vitamin E works as an antioxidant. This beauty star helps to repair and build tissue as well as help with blood circulation (allowing you to get nutrients to your hair follicles that grow your hair)
To help nourish hair, support hair thickening and reduce the inflammation that can lead to hair loss. As if we didn’t need another reason to reach for our favourite seed, salmon or egg recipe!
Last but very not least, zinc is really important for hair growth and repair. Hair loss is a common symptom of zinc deficiency, and zinc is involved in the normal division of hair follicle cells so contributes to healthier hair. If that’s not enough, it is also thought that zinc helps to keep the oil glands around the hair follicles growing properly.
